High quality endoscopy and specialist gastroenterology, with expertise in advanced endoscopic procedures.
High quality diagnostic, screening and surveillance endoscopy, with specialist expertise in advanced endoscopic procedures including EMR and ESD. Care is designed around accurate diagnosis, high-quality examination and the right treatment for each patient.
High quality endoscopy, with specialist expertise when it matters.
The majority of patients are referred for high quality gastroscopy and colonoscopy for screening, surveillance, investigation of symptoms and diagnostic gastroenterology. Dr Schubert also provides advanced endoscopic assessment and treatment for patients who require more specialised expertise.
Precision, expertise and a specialist focus.
Dr Jonathon Schubert is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Interventional Endoscopist with a particular focus on advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.
Following specialist training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology in South Australia, Dr Schubert completed an Interventional Endoscopy Fellowship at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital. He subsequently undertook further training in flexible endoscopic surgery and ESD in leading centres in Germany and Japan.
His practice includes the assessment and endoscopic treatment of complex mucosal lesions, selected early gastrointestinal cancers, large colorectal polyps, Barrett's-related neoplasia and other conditions requiring advanced endoscopic expertise.
Dr Schubert works closely with referring gastroenterologists, General Practitioners, surgeons, oncologists and multidisciplinary teams to determine the most appropriate approach for each patient.
He also has a background in Engineering and a PhD from the University of Adelaide focused on Helicobacter pylori and gastric cancer risk.
Gastroenterology, endoscopy & advanced endoscopy.
Referrals are welcomed for general gastroenterology, high quality endoscopy, screening and surveillance, as well as advanced endoscopic assessment and treatment.
ESD & EMR
Advanced endoscopic resection of selected large, complex or superficially invasive gastrointestinal lesions.
Complex colorectal polyps
Assessment and management of large or difficult colorectal lesions, including lesions referred for advanced resection.
Barrett's oesophagus
Assessment, surveillance and endoscopic treatment of Barrett's-related dysplasia and neoplasia.
Endoscopic ultrasound
Diagnostic EUS and selected tissue sampling for upper gastrointestinal and pancreaticobiliary conditions.
Small bowel investigation
Capsule endoscopy and balloon-assisted enteroscopy for selected small bowel disorders and bleeding.
General gastroenterology
Assessment of reflux, dysphagia, abdominal pain, altered bowel habit, iron deficiency, gastrointestinal bleeding and other gastrointestinal conditions.
Dilatation & therapeutic endoscopy
Endoscopic dilatation for selected gastrointestinal strictures, together with other appropriate therapeutic interventions.
Advanced endoscopy when a more specialised approach is needed.
Most patients do not need advanced endoscopy. For selected lesions, however, techniques such as EMR and ESD can allow removal of significant gastrointestinal lesions without conventional surgery. These procedures require careful assessment of the lesion, its depth and its cancer risk.
Endoscopic mucosal resection
Removal of selected larger or complex mucosal lesions using an endoscopic technique, commonly in the colon and upper gastrointestinal tract.
Endoscopic submucosal dissection
A highly specialised technique allowing en-bloc removal of selected superficial gastrointestinal neoplasia, including lesions where conventional polypectomy or EMR may not be suitable.
Endoscopic ultrasound
Specialist ultrasound performed from within the gastrointestinal tract, including selected tissue sampling and assessment of upper gastrointestinal and pancreaticobiliary conditions.
Small bowel endoscopy
Deep enteroscopy for selected small bowel lesions, bleeding and other conditions identified through capsule endoscopy or other investigations.
High quality endoscopy and thoughtful care.
High quality endoscopy is the foundation of good gastroenterology — accurate examination, careful diagnosis and appropriate follow-up, with advanced techniques available when they are needed.
High quality examination
Careful, thorough endoscopy is central to screening, surveillance and the investigation of gastrointestinal symptoms and disease.
Advanced techniques when appropriate
For selected lesions, EMR, ESD, EUS, dilatation and other advanced techniques provide additional options beyond routine endoscopy.
Multidisciplinary decision-making
Complex cases and invasive cancers are considered in conjunction with appropriate gastroenterology, surgical, oncology and pathology expertise.
Clear communication and follow-up
Findings, pathology and recommendations are communicated clearly to patients and their referring doctors, with surveillance or further treatment arranged where required.
From referral to follow-up.
Every pathway is individual, but most patients follow three simple stages.
Review & planning
The referral, previous endoscopy, imaging and pathology are reviewed to determine the appropriate next step.
Specialist procedure
Where appropriate, treatment is performed in an accredited hospital or day-hospital setting.
Results & ongoing care
Pathology and findings are reviewed and a surveillance or further-treatment plan is communicated.

Refer a patient.
Referrals are welcomed from General Practitioners, gastroenterologists, surgeons and other specialists. GPs are welcome to refer patients for both general gastroenterology and specialist endoscopic assessment. A referral outlining the clinical question, with relevant pathology, imaging and previous endoscopy reports where available, helps us arrange the most appropriate care.
- General gastroenterology assessment and investigation
- Gastroscopy and colonoscopy for screening, surveillance or diagnostic indications
- Complex or large colorectal polyps
- Suspected early gastrointestinal neoplasia
- Barrett's oesophagus with dysplasia or suspected neoplasia
- Lesions requiring consideration of EMR or ESD
- Selected indications for EUS
- Obscure gastrointestinal bleeding or unexplained iron deficiency
- Small bowel lesions requiring balloon-assisted enteroscopy
- Complex cases requiring an advanced endoscopic opinion
Simple referral process.
Send a referral directly to the practice. The rooms will contact the patient to arrange the appropriate consultation or procedure.
Before you book.
Can I be referred specifically for ESD or EMR?
Yes. Patients with large or complex gastrointestinal lesions can be referred for an advanced endoscopic opinion. The most appropriate treatment is determined after review of the clinical history, endoscopic findings and pathology where available.
Is advanced endoscopy an alternative to surgery?
For selected early gastrointestinal neoplasia, endoscopic resection may provide definitive treatment while preserving the involved organ. Suitability depends on the depth and nature of the lesion, the risk of lymph-node or metastatic disease, technical considerations and the available alternatives.
What happens after an ESD or EMR?
The resection specimen is reviewed by pathology and the results are used to determine whether endoscopic surveillance, further endoscopic treatment or another treatment approach is appropriate. Recommendations are communicated to the patient and referring doctor.
Where are procedures performed?
Procedures are performed at selected accredited private hospitals and day hospitals in Adelaide. The appropriate location depends on the procedure and the patient's individual requirements.
Specialist expertise. Thoughtful care.
Advanced endoscopy combines technical expertise with careful patient selection, clear communication and close collaboration with referring doctors.
